Maybelle is President & Chief Executive Officer and a co-founder of MTrap Inc. Previously, she served as Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of Business Development of Biomerix Corporation. Prior to Biomerix, Maybelle helped start Eminent Research Systems/Clinsights, a clinical research organization focused on the medical technology segment (acquired by PPD Medical Device). She also held managerial roles at Manor Care Health Services (acquired by Health Care and Retirement Corporation) and The Boston Consulting Group. Maybelle has over 20 years of healthcare experience including operations management, business development, clinical research services, and strategic planning. Maybelle graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in biology from Yale University and a M.B.A. from Harvard University.
Miguel Abal, PhD
Chief Scientific Officer
Dr. Abal is currently the head of the Translational Medical Oncology Laboratory at University Hospital of Santiago de Compostela (SERGAS) and a senior scientist (I3SNS program) at the Health Research Institute of Santiago (IDIS). Dr. Abal is a co- inventor of the MTrap technology and holds numerous patents in diagnostic oncology and metastatic disease treatment. He is the author on over 50 publications, mainly in gynecological and colorectal diseases. He was a founding partner of TransBioMed, a biotech company dedicated to products and technology for diagnosis and therapy in oncology that was acquired by Amadix (Advanced Marker Discovery). Dr. Abal received a BSc in Pharmacy from University of Santiago de Compostela and a PhD in Pharmacy from CIB-CSIC in Madrid.
Rafael Lopez, MD, PhD
Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Lopez is currently the head of the Medical Oncology Department at the University Clinical Hospital of Santiago de Compostela. Dr. Lopez leads the clinical trial program at the university and has spearheaded the implementation of state-of-the-art technologies in clinical diagnostics such as CellSearch (Veridex) and BEAMing (Sysmex). Dr. Lopez is a co- inventor of the MTrap technology. He is an active participant in European consortiums and innovation initiatives such as the recently created public-private consortium with Roche (Unidad Mixta Roche-Oncología). Dr. Lopez received a BSc in Medicine and Surgery from the Autonoma University of Madrid and a PhD in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Valladolid.
Alexandre de la Fuente, PhD
Vice President of Research & Development
Dr. de la Fuente is currently a member of Translational Medical Oncology Laboratory at University Hospital of Santiago de Compostela (SERGAS) and CEO of Nasasbiotech Corporation. Dr. de la Fuente is a co-inventor of the MTrap technology, and holds numerous patents and publications in oncology and regenerative medicine. He has a strong background in the use of stem cells for tissue regeneration through his work in the Cellular Therapy Unit of Aging, Inflammation and Regenerative Medicine group of the Institute of Biomedical Research of La Coruña (INIBIC). Dr. de la Fuente was awarded the top PhD honor by the Health Science University (Medicine Department) in 2012.
Vice President of Regulatory, Clinical, and Quality Affairs
Christina is Vice-President of Regulatory, Quality, and Clinical Affairs at MTrap Inc. Previously, Christina served as Director of Regulatory Affairs at Therakos (acquired by Mallinkrodt) and Group Manager, Regulatory Affairs at Globus Medical. Previously, she was Director of Regulatory, Quality, and Clinical Affairs at Biomerix Corporation and Eminent Research Systems/Clinsights and a senior reviewer at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Christina’s experience includes regulatory strategy, preparation and submission of technical submissions and marketing applications, design and management of clinical trials, and development and implementation of ISO compliant quality systems. Christina is certified by the Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society (RAPS). She received her B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from The Catholic University of America.
Vice President of Biomaterials R&D and Production
Larry is currently President of Biomerix Corporation. Prior to joining Biomerix Corporation, Larry served as Vice President, Manufacturing for Crest Foam Industries. His additional experience includes Production Supervisor at Foamex International and a Product Specialist at Engelhard. Larry has over 15 years of experience manufacturing specialty reticulated polyurethane materials and coated composites. Larry is a senior member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Larry graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Rutgers University.
Co-Founder and Advisor
Steve is a Partner on the Private Transactions team at Deerfield. He joined Deerfield in 2013 to work on structured transactions in Deerfield’s Private Design Funds. Steve has been a founder and manager of healthcare companies for more than 20 years. Since 2004, he has managed Ascent Biomedical Ventures, a leading venture capital firm he co-founded focused on early stage investment and development of biomedical companies. Since 2011, Steve has been the Chairman of the Board of Continuum Health Partners until its merger with Mount Sinai in 2013, where he is the Senior Vice Chairman of the Mount Sinai Health System, a non-profit healthcare integrated delivery system in New York City with over $5 billion in annual revenues. He graduated from the University of Michigan and earned his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
